23Oct Samsung i8510 for Die-Hard Gadget Freak
The sleek lines and glossy black finish of the Samsung i8510 hides probably the best all-around smartphone out in the market place. There are two things going for it: an 8-megapixel camera and 16 gigabytes of internal storage. That’s just a couple of highlights from amongst an incredibly wide feature set that involves Internet connectivity, social networking, office applications, and of course, the best in multimedia communications and entertainment.
The black, monolithic phone is a fingerprint, magnet owing to its glossy finish. But it’s nothing to worry about as the i8510 keeps its silky sheen throughout. It’s hardly inconspicuous as you hold it in your hand, a relatively large phone that straddles the line of just being the right size without looking fragile. It looks pretty solid and durable.
The phone is made up of a slider mechanism that is exactly like many of Samsung’s slide-up phone models out today. The clear 240×320 pixel, 2.8-inch 16M-color TFT screen is nice and bright for movie viewing, but is susceptible to glare once you’re outdoors in direct sunlight. Under the screen are s set of navigation keys and an optical joystick. It’s not necessary a touchpad, but a few swipes of your thumb can control the onscreen menu. The optical joystick’s sensitivity can be adjusted or turned off completely – which means the surface transforms into a regular keypad that you need to press. It may take some getting used to since the sensitivity often goes haywire, but not by a lot. It was generally a very intuitive control scheme despite being vulnerable to getting accidentally –“swiped” a number of times. Once you slide up the phone you’ll see the keypad. It’s nice little touch that complements the design. Buttons are relatively easy to press and wide enough for large fingers to navigate. With the whole phone slid open, the form is balanced and never awkward.
The interface is fact and easy to navigate with a pivot function that adjusts the screen for horizontal view. On the other hand, the highly customizable features and applications may take you a while it you’re a die-hard gadget freak.
This is good for some, then, because the i8510’s battery life hovers around 330 minutes on minutes on standby and 300 to 500 minutes talk time.
