Nokia unveiled a number of devices with solutions that can be personalized to connect people in new and better ways.

“Nokia envisions a world where people will be empowered to share and connect with what matters most to them through highly personalized and contextually relevant solutions,” said Nokia’s EVP and chief development officer Mary McDowell in a keynote at the opening ceremony of the event.

“The Asia-Pacific market has been an extremely important region for Nokia over the years and remains hugely important to Nokia. Asian consumers’ eagerness to use technology makes this region a great place to introduce new devices and services,” she added.

“Singapore and many of its Southeast Asian neighbors represented here today will be among the first to take advantage of the future solutions Nokia intends to bring as we connect the planet so that everyone can participate,” McDowell said.

Chris Carr, vice president for sales in the SEAP region, commented: “We are witnessing exciting developments in our industry driven by the rapid convergence of the Internet and mobile. This is not only happening in advanced markets but also for everyone.”

“According to industry estimates, we have already reached the milestone of four billion mobile connections globally early this year. The next phase of growth will be very much driven by the emerging markets, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam,” he added.

“Many of the (people) from these markets are accessing the Internet, information, education, and entertainment on their first mobile. Nokia is playing a pivotal role in this transformation,” Carr said.

Taking the spotlight at the event was Nokia’s new flagship handset, the N97, a touch-screen and slide-out full-QWERTY keypad multimedia powerhouse boasting a whopping 32GB storage capacity, fast WLAN and HSDPA connectivity, Carl Zeiss lens with five-megapixel resolution, 3.5-inch 16:9 widescreen LCD with Flash support for Internet videos, mapping capabilities, and A-GPS with voice-guided navigation, among many others.

Another multimedia overachiever seen at Nokia Connection 2009 was the N86, a dual-slider handset featuring a stunning eight-megapixel, wide-angle Carl Zeiss camera with a powerful dual-LED flash, 2.6-inch OLED screen made of hardened glass, and 8GB of storage capacity. Its GPS receiver allows it to have full voice and pedestrian navigation and even geotagging of photos.

On the enterprise handset side, Nokia unveiled the E72, its latest full-QWERTY smartphone which brings a rich mobile e-mail and instant messaging experience right out of the box.

Hot on the heels of the hugely successful Nokia E71, this Eseries addition maintains the essential elements of its predecessor while improving its capabilities in a number of areas.

Now boasting a five-megapixel camera, the E72 lets users set up instant messaging (IM) accounts provided by Nokia Messaging direct from the home-screen. In just a few steps, device owners will be able to connect to their favorite IM accounts such as Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi, among many others.

The Nokia E72 is expected to begin shipping late in the third quarter.

For music lovers, Nokia showed off its new 5530 XpressMusic, a compact XpressMusic device that uses a touch interface for accessing people and content on the brilliantly clear home-screen.

The scrolling Contacts Bar provides direct access to 20 people and their latest conversations and media updates. The home-screen also features one-touch shortcuts to content and popular social networks like Facebook and MySpace.

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic follows in the footsteps of the popular Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, expanding the touch XpressMusic phone range with a youthful device that has a solid stainless steel frame finish and comes in five vivid colors.

The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is expected to begin shipping in the third quarter.

Nokia also unveiled the 3710 fold, a handset that balances eye-catching design with the latest in mobile functionality.

The compact Nokia 3710 fold adds a personal touch with an artistic pattern on the cover and comes with an appealing array of features in a familiar user interface. It is expected to be available in the fourth quarter.

Sharing the spotlight with the new handsets at Nokia Connection 2009 was Ovi Store and Forum Nokia, Nokia’s means of building a sound business ecosystem with content providers and third-party developers and making it reach millions of Nokia users. Forum Nokia works closely with more than four million developers from around the world to develop applications for Nokia devices.

Representatives of content providers and developers like Gambit, Singapore Press Holdings and tenCube were present at the Nokia Connection 2009 to demonstrate to the media and analysts their innovative applications developed for Nokia and Ovi Store.

With Ovi Store, content providers and developers have the opportunity to distribute their media and applications to millions of Nokia consumers across more than 75 Nokia devices.

Nokia’s latest flagship device, the N97, which is just hitting the region’s store shelves as you read this, is the first device to ship with Ovi Store, offering consumers easy access to applications, games, videos, and much more.

Choosing the best cell phone is complex and there are a lot of important features to consider when buying a cell phone. But don’t do it by yourself! Let the experts help you!

FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

A. Browse through search engines, read reviews here, and ask other users to what is the best phone. Doing researches you’ll be able to come up with detailed specs for particular models you are eyeing. (This would include: price; reseller/dealer location; features warranty; availability)

B. Decide what type and kind of phone you want.

To do this, give yourself time to deal with 10 most important questions. Ask yourself:

1. Would you want to listen to music with your phone?

There are a number of phones which include radios or MP3 players. These have the convenience of two devices in one, but are sometimes more expensive.

You may want an acceptable audio quality, with added features or an excellent sound quality but with fewer features.

A phone with a speakerphone is not only safer on the road but is useful while using your hands for something else.

2. How important is cell phone signal reception?

Not all cell phones behave the same way with radio frequencies (the frequencies on which cell phones transmit and receive voice conversations, data and text messages). This matters particularly if you live in or travel to rural areas or where the cellular network is not as developed compared to larger cities.

3. Do you prefer clamshell, bar or slider?

If you want a protected keypad, less small and less bulky, go for clamshell or “flip cover”. But if you want the top part sliding up to reveal a keypad, choose a slider phone. Or a cell phone with no flip cover, a standard bar-shaped phone because they are sleek and readily available.

4. Do you need a big memory for pictures and music?

Some phones have built-in memory or even a hard-drive with memory expansion slots. Others only have little memory, which will limit the number of pictures, music or other files you can keep in your cell phone.

5. How do you feel about Connectivity?

Hooking up your cell phone and your PC can be useful for a variety of reasons:

Transfer pictures from cell phone to PC (vice versa)

Upload music from PC to cell phone (vice versa)

Update and edit your cell phone’s phonebook (with the right software)

Upload music from PC to cell phone (vice versa)

Or even use your cell phone as a flash drive

6. What is your budget for this cell phone?

The more features you look, the higher the cost.

7. Do you want a built-in camera?

Most cell phones include built-in digital cameras. This lets you send pictures to friends while on the move and may have business applications. From there how good the camera you want to be.

8. Do you care about the quality of the display?

Cell phone displays do not all have the same resolution and color quality. The higher the resolution is, the crispier it looks.

9. Will you travel overseas with your cell phone?

If you travel a lot and plan to use your phone overseas occasionally, consider the bands it supports. Tri band phones and higher works for most countries.

10. How much battery life do you need?

People who talk a lot while away from home for long periods need a better battery than those who only use a cell phone once or twice a day.

C. Shop for your phone. Canvass in CgeNa and compare prices.

TIPS: Make sure that you’re comfortable with how you navigate the cell phone you chose.

Remember to always keep the warranty information of the unit, and submit registration information where necessary. Also, ask for warranty information from the reseller as well as the duration of their return/replacement policies.

Remember to always check for seals and genuine stickers on the box and on the unit itself to make sure that your new mobile phone is legally sold, and is has not been tampered in any way.

Until recently, the vast majority of mobile phones had been priced between $100 and $300, with only Vertu, a division of Nokia, manufacturing uber-premium phones. With prices starting at around $4,000 Vertu phones are only for the filthy rich, and the super famous.

However, Vertu’s monopoly of the luxury phone market is coming to an end with the launch of several new luxury mobile makers, including Gresso, Mobiado and GoldVish. Other mobile phone manufacturers are also partnering with luxury brands to produce a range of premium mobile phones, such as LG and Prada, D&G and Motorola, and now Tag Heuer and Modelabs. Finally, there are the ridiculous, super-expensive one-offs, made purely for headline grabbing.

10. Gresso Luxury Phone = $expensive

The Russia based Gresso, is a new entry into the luxury phone market. Their aptly name “Gresso Luxury Phone” is made of gold and African Blackwood. Apparently they will be releasing a collection of five models called the Black Aura collection, and the designer is a “well known” Italian designer. Currently there are two versions of the African Blackwood phone, one with pink gold highlights named the Gresso Blackwood Gold Edition, and one made entirely of African Blackwood. In addition to the two African Blackwood phones Gresso also make a phone made entirely of pink gold named the Gresso Gold phone. Initially, the phones will be on sale only in Russia.

9. Lamborghini 8800 Sirocco from Nokia = $To be announced

The Lamborghini Nokia 8800 Sirocco is another special edition, like the previously launch Aston Martin branded Sirocco. It will ultimately be a standard 8800 Sirocco but with the addition of the famous Lamborghini logo engraved on the font and the back, plus ball bearings from the auto company to in the slider phone mechanism. The Lamborghini phone will be a limited edition with only 500 being made. It will also feature Lamborghini graphics as wallpapers, screensavers, ringtones, and even has a short documentary video about the Lamborghini.

8. Bang & Olufsen (Samsung) Serene = $1,250 ($675)

Bang & Olufsen hooked up with Samsung to design the sleek but unconventional Serene. Its not a bad looking phone and it even has a built-in motor to assist you in opening and closing the phone. It’s not very practical however, requiring a special screwdriver to access the battery and the SIM card, and its circular keypad will take some getting used to. Also, for some strange reason they have positioned the camera lens on the side of the device, which will make it difficult to align snapshots via the viewfinder on the display.

7. Mobiado Professional EM (wood) = $1,900 ($1,027)

The Mobiado Professional EM, is a wood-clad upgrade of their earlier Nokia-based phone that includes a 1.3 megapixel camera, music player, FM radio, Bluetooth, and according to Mobiado it’s the first production phone with Titanium buttons. Only 200 are made and each one has its limited number engraved on the back. At $1,900 however, you”re still paying an awfully high premium for a fairly basic phone encased in wood!

6. Gold Edition Nokia 8800 Phone = $2,700 ($1,459)

If you have $2,700 to spare, you can now buy the Nokia 8800 in 24K gold. However, be warned, if you think you’ll be getting a better phone for your extra cash, you won’t! The features found on the Gold Edition are the standard 8800 features, which are pretty basic. It includes a 0.5 Mega pixel SVGA camera, 64 MB of internal memory, 64 voice polyphonic rigntones, FM Radio, Mp3 Player, video recording and 180 mins talktime. However, the Gold Edition does includes a special edition box and charging dock!

5. Motorola V220 Special Edition = $28,000 ($51,800)

Austrian designer Peter Aloisson, has taken a standard Motorola, studded it with 1,200 diamonds and added a keyboard inlaid with 18 carat gold. The outcome is a $28,000 handset, suitable only for footballers and film stars!

4. Vertu Diamond = $88,000 ($47,567)

The Diamond is Vertu”s premium range of high-end mobile phones. As the name suggests the handsets in the Diamond range are diamond-encrusted handsets made from platinum. Only 200 of the handsets are produced, the most expensive believed to be worth an estimated $50,000.

3. Sony Ericsson Black Diamond = $300,000 ($162,162)

The Black Diamond has been available in 2007, not from Sony Ericsson but by a company called VIPN. Initially only 5 unique numered pieces are available for the unbelievable price of, wait for it… $300,000.

With regards to the specifications, don’t expect anything remarkable for your money. It will have Quad-band with Wi-Fi, an Intel 400Mhz processor running windows mobile 5, and a touch sensitive 2″ screen. It will also include internal memory of 128mb and will come with a 2Gb SD card for external storage, plus a respectable 4 Megapixel camera.

The designer Jaren Goh has used some pretty impressive materials for the build, featuring titane with polycarbonate, mirror-finish cladding and diamonds.

2. Vertu Signature Cobra = $310,000 ($167,567)

Vertu takes orders for the Signature Cobra, designed by French jeweler Boucheron; only 8 are being made! The Cobra features one pear-cut diamond, one round white diamond, two emerald eyes and 439 rubies. Vertu will also be offering a “cheaper” version, ruby free, at $115,000 ($62,162).

1. Goldvish “Le million” = $1,000,000 ($540,540)

A PR stunt it may be, and they surely can’t be expecting to sell any, but the Goldvish “Le million” is officially the most expensive mobile phone in the world, according the Guiness Books of Records. There’s even been talk of a $1.3million phone, but this has fewer diamonds than the Goldvish so I can’t see where the extra expense comes from! The “Le million” is a one off, featuring a blinding 120 carats worth of VVS-1 grade diamonds, according to designer Emmanuel Gueit. If $1 million is out of your price range, the Geneva-based Goldvish also offer several other diamond-encrusted 18k gold models in your choice of rose, yellow, or white, starting at a much more reasonable $25,600 ($13,837).

Want a Cell phone that turns into a Robot? Me too. But while there’s little hope any of us will ever get their very own Transformer, a Japanese company called Softbank Mobile Corp. wants to hook you up with the next best thing. It’s called the PhoneBraver, and looks like a small humanoid robot with arms, legs, and faces. The little monster’s bodies are made up of the cell phone itself.

This doesn’t require canabalizing or damaging your Cell phone. The phone actually remains functional. It even comes with enough A.I. to recognize and comment upon the user’s habits. The PhoneBraver is only capable of understanding eyes and action responses, but still. Talking into your phone isn’t new, but talking to JUST your phone certainly is.

Some of you (Read: most of you) are wondering Why? The answer lies in Japanese’s cultural love of humanoids and robots in general. In some cases, automated machines (that you could technically call a robot) have replaced security guards, receptionists, and other functions on the island nation, which also happens to be a technological powerhouse. Seriously. Robots? My VCR is still blinking 12:00 am. Ah, yes I still have a VCR. It doesn’t do anything anymore; just tell that one time, every second of every day. But I digress.

A Cultural Propensity for Robots

Aside from being the absolute boss when it comes to handheld electronics, Japan also has a pretty hard-core cellular phone market. The robot phones themselves were inspired by an upcoming television series entitled Cell Phone Investigator 7. I’ve not seen it, and probably never will. But that doesn’t mean this isn’t cool.

The phones-turned-miniature robots are designed to comment upon the user’s habits. Calling a certain person often will elicit a response. This is good for lonely people, although the pragmatic uses of a robot-phone are few. The arms and legs are opposable, but the PhoneBraver won’t be able to move around on it’s own (Thank God).

The Nokia E63 can switch modes with a single key press, switching from a view of corporate mail, appointments and intranet data, to a personal mode with pictures of friends, personal e-mail and shortcuts to favorite hobby blogs or websites.

Whyte says, “The amazing response we have seen to the Nokia E71, which has very quickly become the best selling model in its category, lets us know that we are heading in the right direction. People want a rich experience when using messaging, social networks and the Internet. With the Nokia E63 you can enjoy the Web, update your status and work meaningfully with multiple e-mail accounts.”

The Nokia E63 runs on Symbian OS 9.2 S60 version 3.2.

The Finnish company has come out with another winner in the E63. With the holidays already here, Nokia seems to want to be part of the smartphone segment with lots of options available for more cellphone-crazy Pinoys like me.

Nokia always has several cellphone options to choose from in each segment of the cellphone market. It seems that the winning formula of the Finnish company is to make as many choices as there are users. It is because of this that it continues to stay on top of the cellphone game.

The standard features of the Eseries cellphones are what the E63 has. It offers 3G, GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi, A2DP Bluetooth and infrared as connectivity options. A standard 2MP camera with Flash and sleeker design makes it ideal.

The phone measures 113 x 59 x 13 mm, making it shorter by 1 mm, 2 mm wider and thinner by 3 mm compared to its E71 brother. It weighs less than two grams.

The Nokia E63 also includes Files on Ovi, a service where people can get remote access to their PC files even when their computer is offline. Those who purchase the phone will be pleased to know that it comes with a 365-day subscription to Files on Ovi.

You can record and view images and videos with the digital camera and bright landscape display, listen to music downloaded from a number of other sources, via the standard 3.5-mm audio jack or customize the device through the thousands of applications available for download.

The standards that Nokia is known for are readily present in the E63. Texting, sending MMS, updating music and keeping the contacts updated are one-key touch away.

As is the case with Nokia, if the system isn’t broke why change it? But with the E63, Nokia has put a few nice touches, making the cellphone one to be desired from Santa.

And for the younger folk out there, whose busy lives need them to be connected 24/7, why not give the P14,200 Nokia E63 a spin. It would be a perfect fit for students.

It has common functions like SMS and MMS messaging. But wait, there’s more! Presenting the AMS or Audio messages! If for some reason you can’t manage to read your messages in your phone inbox or email (say you’re stuck in traffic or forgot to put on your reading glasses), just one press of a button and a voice will tell you what your message is, who it’s from and when it was received.

GAMES

You’ll get so addicted to gaming with this unit! Even a non-gamer would love this. I know I have; I’m usually just a text-call-and-camera person when it comes to cellphones, but this phone just got me so hooked with “Marbles”

AUDIO/MUSIC

This phone has FM radio, supports MP3, MP4, eAAC+ and WMA.

NAVIGATION

Cool navigation feature. This is very helpful for those people who have a limited sense of direction…or no sense of direction at all. You can connect or navigate without using the internet. Just click the cross like blue button below and the integrated compass will guide you to your chosen destination.

Navigation is the key selling point of Nokia 6210. Duh!!! But really, compared to the old model 6110 which also includes similar features like “navigation,” hindi naman kailangan na slimmer, more easy to use and mas mukhang edgy ang Nokia 6210.

THE VERDICT

The ease of use for Nokia E66 is simply superb, it has a very little learning curve ?no need to be a genius to be able to use it. The design and look is excellent, one of the best designed Nokia phone.

The satisfaction level for this phone is 100%.

For those who have the budget and looking for a simple yet elegant and complete featured slider phone. Gadgetbites.com highly recommends Nokia E66.
